As an amateur, can I copyright my photographs without going through some legal procedure?

You can add confirming ownership details (you legally already have copyright as it’s your photo) to the Exif/metadata in camera or in software packages afterwards. Commercially I never bothered. I charged the client for the photo and they took the files. I did keep copies of course but when customers asked about ownership I used to say …. “ You keep the negatives, you loose them, you pay me to redo them” ![]() A lot of the time I was using those photos immediately in brochures, catalogues and advertising ….so it never cropped up. In amateur status I use to put a copyright “C” mark with name and year on the corner of the photos. But they can be easily removed with software, even before AI content aware slickness. Keeping images low resolution when posting would also generally render them unusable by 3rd parties anyway.

As Eric says and he has many years of experience. I believe the best way if you are wanting recompense is to get someone to commission you that way you get paid up front and they technically own the images unless they agree to waive ownership to you.

You may have copyright but enforcing it is a very expensive process - if doing it for someone then you have a contract, verbal or written, and may be able to persue through small claims court, but still a lot of aggro!

Absolutely. I avoided all that potential angst by just setting a price for the photography that accommodated that eventuality. If customers baulked at the price I just emphasised the point that THEY owned and HAD the photos…. to do with as they will. They invariably saw that as a bonus.

I put the copyright details in camera and put a C name and year in the Botton corner as you would see on some of the shot on site. I've only had one image used once without permission, found out his address and sent a invoice which he paid.

You never know - I once took a photo from the inside of my van early one morning on the way to see to my horse - put it up on instagram and the BBC "nicked" it!

chrisbet wrote: Did you pursue them? I used to work for a marketing guy who got me to do a website for a travel company client. He provided me with all the images for the places they covered to be used on the site. One of the images was grabbed from Getty images!!! Getty invoiced him £4000 for its use. He eventually negotiated the price down to £800…but he had to pay it to save face with his client.
