Thanks to all for your advice and tips. ![]() Generally I think I have a similar mindset regarding aperture priorities, and the RAW format. My aim, being an optimist, is to take the photographs, and not have to b.......r about with them afterwards. I think making use of the bracketing facility is the next step to sorting out the exposure issues. However, I will take the plunge, and experiment on gash photos with the tools in Darktable and NX Studio, and see if I can learn anything......

But the monthly payment to Adobe sticks in my throat somewhat. In all honesty, my biggest hurdle these days is raising any enthusiasm to go out and take photos, not the challenges or cost of the processing software. Jans had mobility problems for some time now, that have put a dampener on outings. However she has now got a mobility scooter (actually she’s got 2 being a woman!! ![]() She has also expressed an interest in “trying” the Fuji …so there may be a “customer” (some chance!!) if I ever decided to jump ship again.

Never looked at darktable, must have a look but the thought of learning new software is a bit daunting. Brain is too slow taking things in now. ![]()

I am having the same problem with Darktable - so far I haven't found examples in the manual to offer guidance to the myriad of tools available - my few remaining unpopulated braincells are putting up a stout resistance to accepting the fresh onslaught of knowledge Experimenting with camera settings seems far easier and would be effective if only I could write them down...now where did I put my photographic logbook .. and where is my pen .. not to mention my specs.... ![]() i have just found what looks like an excellent guide to using Darktable - it's about 5 years old. But it's well worth a visit (unless you have already seen it) https://mel365.com/darktable-tutorials/

WOW. Not seen this before!!! Female Sparrowhawk flew across garden at lighting speed…the target a small grey squirrel carrying a walnut across the lawn. There were no birds in the garden as it’s peeing down but the squirrels are taking advantage because the local cats that usually chase them are tucked up indoors also. That must have been one hungry Sparrowhawk or inexperienced to attempt one of those vicious biting scratching things. She missed it by inches, the squirrel dropped its nut and shot into a rose bush. The Sparrowhawk landed on one of our garden statues but left when I approached the window. The squirrel emerged up a trellis behind the rose bush, seemingly unaware how close that was. Ironically one of the cats very nearly caught it (or another) earlier in the week….leading a charmed life!!
