I tend to use Text Edit for snippets of text like address labels, extracts from eMails etc. The general philosophy is to allow you to resume where you left off.

Personally I usually complete a task before closing an application so to me it becomes an inconvenience. All part of the process of making it 'user friendly' for the undisciplined 'dumb' mass users.

As an aside, a hidden aspect of the last three OS's since Lion is that while you may quit an application, it actually remains running in the background in case you suddenly decide you need to re-visit a task you were recently working on. You may notice re-launching an application is often much quicker than the initial launch. If you need more resources then it will eventually take those reserved by the closed applications as needed.

Robert-

Just an aside, but you might want to look into replacing Text Edit with a free app called Bean - it's great!

I'm not talking about snippets for quick copying etc - that is a good use of Text Edit. I make lots of notes (or copy from web pages etc) and I love the way apple Notes was immediately synced to all devices.

This bug in the Notes app on the macs pretty much makes it worthless until they fix it.

Tom

Thanks for the heads up on Bean.
I have just completed my third mavericks install/upgrade.
Worst part is the inability to stop the Update executing/happening before you can save the update file. This is the real pain of Apple's insistence on the AppStore for everything. In the past it was download once and use it many times now it is dependent on the speed of your internet download as to how long it takes to get a job done! Not all changes are for the better. There should be an option to delete/keep upgrade program at the end of the process.

What is a 'Flying Window' Tom?

I have not seen (noticed) any difference in the way Mail works for a long while (Years).

Notes does seem to have some anomalies in the iterations of editing existing notes, all of a sudden it will create a 'New' Note, and switch focus to that leaving the previous version as it was before the edit, I think...

I have only just noticed it in the last week or so.

Robert-

When you open an email and when you reply to an email, there is an ugly animation on the screen, flying the window into view...something you might have expected in Microsoft Bob!!!

Tom, sorry for the delayed response, I have been checking this out. I have never seen the 'Flying Windows' effect you describe. Opening eMails and replying to an eMail simply causes a new window to appear instantly.

Quite a while ago (Snow Leopard?) I downloaded an application called Tinker Tool, which is a very useful extra set of [deeper] preference settings. My main reason was to be able to set the default screen shot format to JPEG rather than TIFF. My Screenshots are almost always used to post illustrations in forums, so If I capture in TIFF I always have to open software to convert the image to JPEG, which is a pain especially if I am in a hurry. TinkerTool allows the user to select from a comprehensive range of formats to store screen shots in.

http://www.bresink.com/osx/TinkerToolSys2.html

I haven't bothered to access it since I installed it and set it up initially to my needs it has survived numerous updates and both beta and public. I suspect the settings I made must have suppressed the Flying Windows effect you describe. I took a look and discovered my TinkerTool was not compatible with Mavericks so I have updated it to the latest version.

I now have the Flying Window effect you describe!!! <vbg>

But only for replies to eMails, not for opening an email to read. So it must have been a setting in TinkerTool which was suppressing the feature. To be honest I don't find the flying window offensive, I don't feel it adds anything to my use of the computer but it doesn't get in my way particularly.

I have tinkered with the settings in TinkerTool but I haven't found a combo to suppress the flying windows when replying to eMails yet. I will tinker some more, it may be in TinkerToolSys2, which I haven't updated yet. if I can't find it I will contact Bresink and ask the Q. Given the flying window has started since I updated TinkerTools it must be related.

Another useful thing you can set is to restore the repeat key............. More use to me than diacritic characters. Simple enough to revert if my needs change.

TinkerTool is NOT meddling with the system, it is simply providing access to existing preference setting which Apple have chosen to hide. As I have discovered, the settings survive major and minor system updates. I hope this may be of some interest.

I'm stuck again just like ML. My BT router stops the downloads at 995mb. Will have to take my laptop to a neighbour and use his system to download then make a bootable copy like last time.

Robert-

I have Tinker Tool installed - they updated it last week or I would have forgotten about it (I subscribe to MacUpdate and they reminded me :-).

But Marianne doesn't have TinkerTool on her macs and she also has the flying windows.

You're right, it doesn't fly open on Open, just Reply...but I find it very very annoying and almost motions sickness feeling like iOS 7 (which let you decrease the animation) when replying to lots of emails...arrrgh :-)

Problem solved by logging onto BT Wi-fi through the same router. Now downloaded and working well on my laptop. Bootable copy made with DiskmakerX very easily.

Bob,
Phone BT Broadband Helpline and complain.
They will log the problem and if necessary send you a new router.

Alternatively try this program as your Download Manager - Progressive Downloader.

Of course this will not work for stuff from the AppStore.

All you need to do is stop the installation after the installer has downloaded. Then you can copy it to a stick or whatever.

For anyone who needs to know, Mavericks is very VPN unfriendly ... Cisco ANyConnect simply does not work

Never seem to be there when the download finishes. No problem as I have a copy on a USB now. :-)

Do you have a fix for your Cisco problem?
