It highlights or demonstrates the danger of the subscription model of software subscriptions or the monthly lease model that many software vendors want us to adopt. I have long advocated that subscription model is an 'out of control' mode of purchase. I think all suppliers should offer subscription and/or purchase.

Caveat emptor!

I will NOT subscribe - if I can't download and own the item, I find an alternative that I can.

This is one of the reasons I run my own hosting and mail server - I am not going to lose everything I have built up over years because someone else goes bust or decides to close down their service.

I could not agree more.
On the other hand, in Adobe's history we have seen many cases of forced upgrade (or purchase a new version) through planned obsolescence.
Similarly most software developers terminate (or fail to upgrade) the support certain platform-upgrades (win/mac etc).
To illustrate this:
I still use Nikon's VNX2 software although the mapping/log matching functions have terminated by obsolescence last year.
(the later VNX-I has properties I disklike)

I was forced to upgrade to View NX-i by the failure of Nikon Transfer to work properly on MacOS 10.12.0. However I now know that Capture NX2 works on MacOS 10.14.n so I will be sticking with that where I have it.

I don't like the subscription model much, it relies not only on the supplier remaining in business but also on their continuing to support older operating systems. My 15" MacBook Pro is too old for 10.14.n so will have to remain at 10.13.n, if any of the software providers using subscription decide to stop supporting my OS I could, potentially, lose the software or upgrades. As it happens I don't have any subscription software nor any intention to acquire any.
