SilverEfex Pro is brilliant if you want state of the art black and white conversions. It is my tool of choice on the rare occasions I want to do a b+w conversion (usually with leica files that respond to this treatment like a duck to water). The others I am not an expert on. I have sharpener pro, but never use it as I can do better by hand. Hope this helps Ed

Thanks Ed, I took a look at the Nik website after I discovered a little about what I have been given. My friend does a some photography but found the plugins more than he could handle, he didn't really understand them. I gave him my G5 2.7 Dual processor Mac, so it was a bit of a swap really... I am looking forward to trying the plugins with Photoshop.

My recollection is that they were not quite as trivial to install as they should have been. Let me know if you have trouble. I cannot remember if you are a Lightroom user. i have SiverEfex set up as a processing option from LR (right click on image) Ed

I haven't used plugins before except in Bibble, where installation was simplicity itself, merely loading the files in the appropriate folder from memory. I only have the Mac Photoshop version and some .exe files which I expect are PC files I can't find any Lightroom versions. One thing I am particularly excited about is the control point technology, which found it's way to the Nikon software but I haven't tried. I have read some interesting accounts of adjusting IR and UV images using control points. It will be a day or two before I catch up with my Photoshop Mac, so I can't play yet. If I get stuck I will yell! Thanks Ed

They are reputedly very good, the color effects is used a lot by a number of professional re-touches and I have heard good things about Silver Effects also.

The more I read about them the more excited I am becoming. I can't wait to put them to use and see how they work. This brings *some* control point technology to Photoshop, a feature which for all photoshop's power and versatility I feel it is lacking. It is a way of very easily, selectively controlling small or large parts of an image providing for fine adjustment without the time often needed to select portions of the image manually. Far better than the magic wand in my opinion, which is fiddly to adjust and frequently selects a ton of stuff which then has to be deselected.

I agree with Ed. SilverEfex is brilliant. ColorEfex is also very good. The tones from SilverEfex are wonderful, a bit like Agfa Bovira if you can remember that! ColorEfex is very dramatic for some landscapes and situations where you want to make unusual and interesting enhancements.

Robert- You will love them. I use all of them except Vivenza. Silver efex is the GREATEST Define is very good for noise reduction ( noise ninja was a bit better but no Lion version). and NIK sharpener is the best bar none. The only one you are missing is color efex pro - worth trying to get a copy free...it's expensive. Cheers, Tom
