Hi All In all of the hurley burley of 2013, I forgot that I'm looking for an answer to my microphone question. I build model rail dioramas for the purpose of making movies. I have equipped the locos with sound - usually recorded from the prototype; but that's another story. What I'm trying to find is a microphone that I can set up apart from the camera, so that the sounds coming from the loco aren't swamped by any sounds coming from sources close to, or touching the camera. I think the easiest way is to get the Nikon microphone that slots into the hotshoe and then the audio cable attaches to the camera. Tried a similar mic with good results. Most of these mics take a CR2 lithium battery, which lasts quite a while, but costs a fortune to replace and isn't too available. I got 2 rechargable CR2's from eBay for less than the cost of 1 Duracell.

That one has a £40.00 postage cost for a £18.49 unit. I tried Amazon, but they won't ship camera stuff into Oz. Still searching. Ideally I would like to get the mic up close to the subjects; so not on top of the camera. Synch isn't much of an issue as you can see from the clip, so I might be able to just stand it on the layout. It's not as obvious in that one, but any sound close to the camera (like pressing buttons on the throttle), comes through extra loud and destroys the illusion. First I have to find someone who will sell me one.

The Nikon mike is ME-1 and works well on the D800 sits in hot shoe and stereo mini jack plugs into camera. An longer cable could easily be added to have mike away from camera an keep it in sync with filming. In UK this mike costs about £100 quite a lot for what it is. I use a pro mixer and much larger mikes for filming with the D800 so find little use for the ME-1 for my type of work.
