Shooting a circular glass walled restaurant with sea views. Bright sunshine outside. Owner wants 'mood/lifestyle' shots as well as f64 views from the table rose ....to Holland. Needless to say, it took a LOT of set up to get light balanced and avoid reflections...a lot of shots. About 1hour into the shoot....one of the SB900 stobes died. Replaced it with a spare SB800. Worked fine for another 20mins...then while moving a stand, it fell off......LCD cracked and no display. Fortunately it stayed working, keeping the channel and group settings, for the commander unit to control. But an expensive equipment malfunction day. Packaged up and off to Nikon for assessment. I have one more bar/restaurant to do next Friday...then i am done for 2013. Fingers crossed the remaining gear hangs together till christmas presents come to rescue.

Oh dear expensive gear day. The are some Nikon clones around now.... check the Yuongnou 565 and 568 units.

It talks of working with onboard command units IN various Nikons. But I wasn't sure whether on board units have the complete range of functionality that the SU800 has? Eg can you change the power output for each of 3 strobes remotely? The dead and walking dead have been packaged up and will be off to Nikon on Monday. Maybe there's a cheap fix? Not with my luck .

I can check out when I see a friend in a week or so. She has a Yuongnuo 565 unit. I'm sure I tried it with my D800 and it did the remote firing and TTL.

It's not the remote firing......it says it will do that. It's the adjustment of the individual strobes output intensity remotely. I don't know if the later body command units are the same as the Su800. Earlier models weren't. You could fire the flashes from the camera, but not vary their output.....if I remember correctly? With the D3 I have to use the Su800 ....but find it very useful to adjust strobes individually without wandering round the set.

I think if it supports CLS then it will TTL and remotely control output for each flash to match requirements. I use the PocketWizard (TT5, TT1, AC3) system for this as well and it works on Fuji and Nikon (shhh dont tell anyone except TomO'C)

Sorry didnt answer the last part which was no the XE2 is very nice but I am happy with the XE1 and XPro1 especially as Fuji keep addressing the issues as I see them. The camera will never achieve the AF speed of a D3, D4, D800 but it works it you work to its strengths. In studio results are astounding. Who needs the heavy Nikon kit when this does it. In fact I have to soften not sharpen. Currently waiting for the 14mm f2.8 as the 10-24mm from Fuji wont arrive until late February when I will be in HK for a wedding. Need to get used to the 14mm (20mm FF) before then!

I'm going to get one of those Yongnuos. I know a couple of people who have them and they seem pretty good. So, are you waiting for a third breakdown, Eric, or has it already happened? lol.
