Since I have the 400mm f2.8 AFS and the Kenro DG300 Pro x2 I will pass on this as my arms get feebler so I cant hand hold this all day it would be a waste for me to invest in this as I would need to carry either the tripod or the lens not both!,,

Tom,
What's the news in this link?
An earlier post elicted some choice comments:
http://www.nikondslr.uk/view_topic.php?id=509&forum_id=3&highlight=800mm

I still think the price is rather hefty, compared to the 600 AF-S lenses.

I dont really see any particular advantage of the 800 f5.6 over a 600mm f4 or 400mm f2.8 other than having a dedicated 800 lens as either of the two other lenses can achieve 1000/1200mm at f8 compared to the 1000mm f7 of the new lens.

I know that this 1/3 stop may mean that the AF performs better but I dont think it will make much difference under poor light conditions.

I thought I was reading "news" on a Web site.

Sorry if this is not - I had never seen a price this high and surely would have remembered it if I did - way out of my league :-)

Well it is news Tom but I think the price is seriously out of range for 99.99% of us. It is really for government departments, newpapers, agencies and similar to but these lenses. I would be surprised if Nikon sell a 100 of these lenses a year, in fact if they sell 500 in total then I would be surprised.

Hardly worth making for that number of sales...

Agreed Tom but many Nikkors must have been low volume sellers, mainly the extreme lenses wide and long. The PC lenses and the UV Nikkor which Nikon do still produce in their specialised products division I understand, at a price. In fact I think the UV Nikkor makes the new 800 lens look a bargain by comparison, size for size.

I think their policy is to make a good range of gear available knowing there is a market for good quality gear, retaining their foothold in the specialised optic market place.
