Also, isn't saliva alkali?? If the breath is acidic due to the carbon dioxide dissolved, if any, I may just lick the lens element to neutralize it.

Bingo.. I hasten to think about all the lovely Leitz I have ruined throughout my life!!! My first real camera was a IIIC and I breathed all over that lens??? How'd a thought!!!
