Rich,

Think about this: at the time the only alternatives were the F 11 1200mm fixed lense and the 360-1200 mm zoom, also F11.
In those days camera's did not have an ISO button to dial in ISO 6400 or more.
Think of night-time baseball, and this is the answer (regardless of the cost).

Cost, as far as I have read: made to order only, something like USD 80.000 .

I saw a guy shooting an F1 race with one of those beasts once, unfortunately he was on the opposite side of the track, and I never caught up with him, to check it out.. BUT the first impression, WOW is that's huge, and the second is where is the truck to transport it???

I also remember seeing an image of a guy walking on a race circuit carrying one of those and the lens was almost as big as he was!!!

heck now days I really have to be inspired to carry my VR200-400 more then a few feet from the Van????

Old age I guess???
