ANyone have one ? I cant put a 1.4x on my 80-200 f2.8 apparently so I was thinking on trying to find a 300 F4 since a 300 2,8 is unreal .

I have a 300mm f4. it's the early version not the current AFS version. I can't speak highly enough of it. I use it with the Kenko Pro 1.4 converter with great success. I have it on a D2x body. My brother uses the AFS version on a D300 with Nikon converter and he can't brag enough about the combination either. It's one lense I don't think you can go wrong owning AND above all using.

And Iain, I have used one myself, Jeff uses one too with both a 1.7 and a 1.4 TC, see the Tern thread. The F4 is a good combination of weight and quality. My 2.8 can weigh heavy after a few hours, but the 2.8 is worth it in my opinion. Cost wise my 2.8 is MF, as are most of my good lenses. I do't do AF due to the cost. Frankly I don't think it makes that much difference to the keeper rate and it keeps me on my toes! Most of my subjects are static.

The later AF-S model is good with fast focus and it takes either the kenko 1.4 tc or the Nikon one well with little or no loss of IQ. It will work with the 1.7 tc but the focus slows a bit

I have a Kenko DG300 Pro x2 and it works on my Nikon 80-200 f2.8 AF (old style trombone zoom) and my 80-200 f2.8 AFS and the 70-200mm f2.8 AFS VR. The same combos should be possible with the other Nikon 80-200 AFD or AF (two ring version). BTW: Dont ask why do I have three lenses that are nearly identical apart from AF speed!!

I have a 300f4 AFS and find it an excellent lens. A perfect compromise of lightweight and reasonable fstop at a decent price. Of course, stating the obvious, having a prime lens can sometimes be restrictive if your subject comes too close. I was photographing bears two weeks ago with the lens on a D7000 (ie 450mm equivalent). One bear came so close I couldn't get it's head in full frame. By the time I had changed to the 80-200mm it had moved further away! Grrrrrr!
