I've kind of answered my own question with a bit of digging and the answer seems to be not great.

I have the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 and have tried it with a Nikon 2x and 2 other converters with a D610. In all cases the images with the TC were of lower quality than cropping an identical image from the lens itself. Problem with all TC's is that they magnify all the defects in the parent lens, by the square of their magnification, and add in allignment tolerances etc. They may work with older DSLRs, but the newer sensors are too much for them.

I can add another dimension... I tried this converter on my 80-200 AFS f2.8. Sold the converter...it just amplified inherent weaknesses not noticeable when using the lens normally. In my experience, converters should only be used with primes. Even then, I never like going beyond 1.4x with any converter.

I have the Nikon 70-200 f2.8 AFS VR and the Kenk DG300 Plus x2 converter. I bought the Nikon 400mm f2.8 AFS VR, does that tell you the story. It is like Eric says better used on primes e.g. Nikon 300mm f2.8 and 400mm f2.8 where it performs very well with little degradation.

With your primes, does it give a better image with the converter, than a cropped prime?

It is close but I actually think that the TC works for Nikon 300, Nikon 400 primes and 500mm mirror lens. It is better than a crop of a 12MP image from D300, D700, D3, D3s but I havent tested with D600 or D800 cameras.

Just did a quick test with a 90mm macro and the results were thumbs down for my 2 converters with the D610. The only positive I've had with this was shooting my D5100 n the Tamron 150-600. There the images were better than cropped D610 from the same tripod location. Here the crop from the D610 was 9mp while the D5300 was 16mp. Set to DX the D600 is 10.3 mg pix.

If I can't get a shot with 500mm and cropping, I need to walk closer. Seems like it's time to upgrade the D3
