OK I know that the new Z series of cameras is new and they are mirrorless not DSLRs.

So I am thinking that should we try to find another domain name such as Nikon-cameras.com or AllNikon.com or something else.

I am open to staying as we are or going for a new domain name with a transition probably with new forum software.

What are your thoughts on this?

Well in my view Z's are DSLR... Nothing about a mirror in DSLR? The Z's are digital, single lens and reflex. o.O

But I agree another name might be worth considering, frankly I don't think the name is that important, generally Google searches find the 'query' text in posts or threads, not the site name.

Most forums I find are as a result of a Google search on a specialised subject, some sites keep coming up, eventually if I have a sustained interest in a specialised subject I may join the forum which I find most helpful and well mannered.

As for the forum software I am sure there has to be something better than this.

I'm not totally convinced that the gallery serves a useful purpose any more.

I think some image thread categories and post images in threads could be better. Especially with the complexities of linking the forum with a separate gallery.

We could have a section with dedicated threads which could be themes for images predominantly, but allowing comments in following posts. Like Cars, railroad, clouds, architecture, trees, pets etc. etc. the list is endless. They could be preset and user created. That would make things simpler and easier to maintain. I think that can be a very successful format, in fact Grahams 'Bird' thread is a perfect example. One of the longest, best threads in history! It certainly draws a LOT of interest.

I always thought 'reflex' referred to the process of diverting the view via a prism and a mirror?

I personally think the current forum name IS potentially restrictive. There are loads of people using bridge, csc, mirrorless etc that might be put off or misled by the Digital SLR header.
o.O

I also think the gallery is unnecessary. We tend to post images that apertain to a subject in the relevant threads. We could have a section for 'critique' but I believe most people come to the forum to gain knowledge on equipment and techniques rather than get opinion on their artistry.

Besides, having images in the threads stops them becoming too dry a read.

o.O

Technology's moved on, it's an electronic mirror! LOL

Doesn't a Z have a pentaprism, with the screen below?

You don't have to have two mirrors (reflectors), the waist level finders were still SLR's, anyway I don't think it's an issue, just me being pedantic!

Submarines don't have periscopes any more, they release a buoy on a tether with a camera onboard, a bit similar.

We seem to be mainly Nikon with occasional excursions to other makes, predominantly stills, what about something like 'Nikon Photography Forum'? We need to steer clear of Birna's 'Nikon Gear', Dallas has 'PhotoZones'. No doubt there are others to avoid.

But I still feel most visitors are drawn by Google searches which are unrelated to the forum title. Yes, the forum name matters but not for attracting visitors in the first place.

You raise an interesting point re search engines.

If you put Nikon DSLR Forums in google ...THIS FORUM COMES UP FIRST. If you omit the DSLR ...WE DONT SHOW.

Assuming our main thrust is for Nikon users maybe we SHOULD try and get Nikon-Z.net and point it at this site? Yes we should redo the headers and if you are really serious about changing forum software ...go for it.

JK,
I agree with Robert: no need to worry about any name-change.
IMHO the term DSLR also covers mirrorless, especially since they can use many Nikon F-mount lenses.
Regards and best wishes, Gilbert

Thanks for your input Gilbert, Robert, Eric.

Other members can still comment. ;-)
Always interested in how people think we need to change with the times.

I'm with Robert on this , I was a bit cautious a few weeks ago posting my Panasonic images for a comparison , but what brought me back here was a return to Nikon ,but I also have other cameras and not all my lenses are Nikon either .so how about NIKON MAINLY FORUM , but allowing for other brands . The various themed sections work well elsewhere to i.e motorsports ,wildlife, birds ,landscapes etc .
A gallery in the day and age of Facebook and Instagram is in my view outmoded . As always he who pays the piper calls the tune

Jeff, we have aways allowed other makes of camera images to be posted, see the Other Makes of Camera sub-forum, but our preference is for things Nikon.
I have a full Fuji X series set of cameras and lenses which I prefer for travel photography.

I don't have a strong feeling on the name, like I say most visitors will never have heard of Nikon DSLR.net, we are only a small group, they put in a search query, about some issue they have or just want to find a nice quiet forum where they can discuss photography. So they search in general terms, occasionally they find us. I don't believe any visitors actually enter our URL unless someone has recommended the forum to them and passed on the URL.

Some stay, some are looking for something different.

Technically it seems there is no pentaprism in the viewfinder so no reflection takes place but I still regard the Z's as DSLR's because you are composing the image through the viewfinder or screen through the actual taking lens, rather than a separate viewfinder and AF and AE are also through the taking lens.

I do think we should actively support and encourage the Z's they ARE the future. Just like digital took over from film, mirrorless will carry forward as it evolves, we will see fewer new mirrored bodies being released over time.

The big question is, what will come out of the hat next?
