Have just managed to processed a few pix from Mondays expedition to Coniston Water where the annual records attempts are being held this week.

The day was perfect, little or no wind and a full Sun all day. I have never been to the records week before so I was feeling my way, not really knowing the best vantage points or even where the measured Kilometre was located. I had a chat with several very helpful competitors in the paddock who kindly explained the best places to view the boats during their attempts.

I used the D3100 with an 18-105mm f3.5-5.6 VR Nikkor for close up pix of the boats and the closing photographs of the end of the day and a D200 with the 300mm f2.8 MF mounted on a monopod for all the longer range photographs. I prefocused on the point I expected the boats to pass, quite a high proportion were acceptably sharp.

These are the rescue/recovery boats moving out from the Coniston village pier to their stations before the record attempts can start.

This is 'Gondola' an original steam powered launch which was recovered from the water some years ago where after it fell into disuse it had been sunk intentionally to preserve it it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SY_Gondola

Gondola now cruises around the lake on a regular daily basis carrying passenges from Coniston to Brantwood http://www.brantwood.org.uk the former home of John Ruskin and around Coniston Water (Coniston is not called a lake).

Brantwood house can be seen in the background.

After the runs were finished we went down the East side of the lake, a pretty drive with the autumn colours, to one of our favourite spots.

This is the pier which features in so many of the calendars and posters.

Not a very good picture but fun.
