Came across this site: http://www.neilawhite.com The Lost Villages section is what I am referring to. This is of course a tiny part of the whole picture which saw the North Sea created from Doggerland and has been going on for millions of years. Does anybody here have a a similar situation which might be recorded for the future? Not too impressed by Mr White's images. Composition isn't his strong point. At least he has done something to record the erosion. There must be paintings, maps and drawings which record the early landscape.

Interesting item. I agree with you about his composition skills. I think that there must be similar events on most coast lines but not necessarily with loss of villages. I know the loss of villages is especially bad in that area but these villages were all fishing villages. Therefore they were built very close to or on the coast to allow easy access. Unfortunately the soil was sandy not stone as in Cornwall.

its been going on for thousands of years robert ,about 1500 years ago the wirral extended a lot further north than it does now ,there was a forest/wood a mile out to where the shore now is ,and a lost village to ,the vikings from the isle of man often used to have markets on the sands as well .well documented if my memory serves me correctly . any part of the coastline thats composed of soil rather than rock will erode over time .i believe the powers that be have taken the let nature take its course attitude rather than pump billions into coastal defences these days. theres even a rather interesting book called "where troy once stood " that using the waymarks of odessyeus journey home actually places the real troy around the area cambridge/newmarket .ancient earthworks in the area lead to it being a possibility and the war raged over tin for bronze making rather than a woman.take away the fact of the drained fens etc and modern coastal defences and its feasible . its also now a proven fact that as recently as 1500-2000b.c the black sea was a pleasant valley ,and rising sea levels at the end of the last mini ice age breached the bosphorus ridge the resulting deluge leading to the biblical tales of gilgamesh and noah .

If that`s not bad enough there`s also man-made erosion , witness the Sahara desert , which was a dense forest until the Romans decided to chop it down for their need of timber,.... did ye have t` mention Brad`s skirt , reminding me of Russel Crowe in a skirt ( Gladiator )

no i think its more to do with climate change at the end of the younger dryass period .which ended 10,000 years ago

Since I or anyone else has accurate records only suppositions and theories I think that to prove of disprove the global warming stuff is going to be difficult. Also as in all probability I wont be around when it is proven with good data I dont think I need to worry to much which theory is right or wrong.

I do n`t know if it was Roman , or if the Moors also had amfi-theatres ( anyone know ? ) , I envy the British expats. who live in sunny Spain , they`re so close to many things , altho` I was a bit disappointed with the Alhambra , I liked the Alcazaba ( Malaga ) .. with a bull fight arena right next to it ,.. so many photo opportunities there .. guess I`ll have t` make do with my summer cottage " Kronborg " ( Hamlets castle )
