The great attraction of my most recent shed is that it's very close to home and, what I hadn't fully realised was it comes with some land, which will make a small but interesting garden for me. As usual it entails a great deal of work, the ground is very rough, a layer of refractory bricks lie about 6 inches below the surface, covered by cinders and a poor pretence of topsoil. Below the layer of bricks is pure sand, as deep as you wish to dig. I did a test hole and stopped at 4 feet deep. However, it's at the edge of a steelworks slag tip. The molten slag ran across the surface of the sand and covers about half the site. I have an elevated shelf which will I think sustain a reasonable level of planting and provide a nice platform to enjoy the view of the estuary. Off out to find my pick and shovel! I forgot to take a real 'before' photograph but I took some yesterday after the initial debris clearance.
