I have been aware of this for a few days...

https://www.dpreview.com/news/6541727532/adobe-test-replaces-10-month-photography-plan-with-1tb-20-month-option

https://dslrbodies.com/accessories/software-for-nikon-dslrs/software-news/2019-digital-photography/adobe-cc-pricing.html

Not unexpected, but doubling the price?  Perhaps I should have been more circumspect pointing out that the monthly cost of the monthly Lightroom/Photoshop plan was less than the cost of a packet of cigarettes.  Adobe are now 'testing' the market to see if photographers are prepared to cough up (pun intended) the cost of two packets of cigarettes a month for their product, with the sweetener of some (laughably tiny) extra online storage.  Some/many people just set fire to their money and inhale the results??? Giving them a short cut to cancer.  At least photography is largely healthy.

I have desperately tried to keep out of this but got dragged into commenting on it on the Fuji X forum that I moderate on.

This was my post there...........

"It is just the early warning of a price hike.

Obviously the people at Adobe need an annual bonus boost!!
In fiscal year 2018, Adobe achieved record annual revenue of $9.03 billion, which represents 24 percent year- over-year growth. "Adobe achieved record revenue of greater than $9 billion and delivered outstanding earnings performance in fiscal 2018," said Shantanu Narayen, president and CEO, Adobe.
Oh greedy, greedy.... Only $2.6B profit.
Adobe Systems net profit 2004-2018 | Statistic

Check the rise in profits since introduction of the Subscription model in mid-2013... And especially in the last two years!
Great if you have Adobe shares but not so great when you see prices rising at greater than inflation."

Personally I would be happy to see Adobe disappear down the San Andreas Fault except that I know it would cause the loss of many people.
It is a greedy company.  I know all the arguments about ..... shareholder value, profits, costs, etc..   It is just a cover-up for Greedy Capitalism.
Profit is good, excessive profit is not.

I moved out from Adobe when they forced the subscription issue.  I buy software, I dont rent it.  This move to CaptureOne Pro has been beneficial to me as I have been forced to learn a software that is in fact as powerful as Lightroom and more as it has Layers, LUTs, etc.....  I still use my Photoshop CS6 very happily.  I also have Affinity Pro as a fallback should my PS CS6 not work.

Rant over.

Not as greedy as Cashpoint operators that want to charge customers 95p because the banks have reduced their payments by 2p per transaction....

Hilti take the prize for me, if you buy one of their top of the range masonry drills, circa. £1500, after (I think) 100hrs a service light comes on, at (I think) 200hrs it stops working, service is free for two years, after that it's expensive.  Nobody else can put the service light out or get it working again because of the chip.  Think hire company with 20 of them...

I think that this is an item that could actually be won if you took them to court as it is unreasonable restraint of use for an item that has been purchased.
I am surprised that none of the hire companies have done this.  I guess someone somewhere knows how to fix the chip!
I would love to find out as it would be good to publish.
What I need is half a dozen of the OOS drills to experiment on. ;-)

BTW....
"Depending on its age and the electronics fitted. if it has the old type electronics, the service light will come on when the machine is due a service (about every 200 Hours) or if the carbon brushes need replacing.
once you have serviced the machine you need to reset the light. do do this, remove the black handle assembly from the main body of the machine. plug it in so that the handle has power, pull the trigger and hold until the light goes out. refit the handle and away you go.

Now if you have the new type of electronics, you will need to return it to hilti for a service, and reset as they have an optical interface which connects to the light from a PC. This can read all the operating data for the machine such as running hours, number of trigger pulls, how long the machine has been plugged in etc. You cannot reset the service counter without this interface and the correct hilti software."

Kill the greedy ba$¥ards.
Adobe, Hilti, etc... Please remember that no matter how clever you think you are that there is always someone somewhere who can out-think you.  It may only happen once per person but we have 7.2Billion people on the planet and only <1000 greedy corporates like you.  The little man will win! Eventually.

My old TE76 (which is the  one I fell over) just keeps going, I have lost count of how many hours it's done.  It was well used when I bought it about 2005, so I have had it for 14 years? It has a service light but I have never seen it light up.

How far would Nikon get if the next model, D6 stopped working after say, 10,000 exposures needing a compulsory 'free service'?  Nobody would buy it.  I wouldn't buy a drill with a compulsory service schedule either.

I thought these shenanigans had stopped after car manufacturers tried to prevent owners from resetting service notifications in high end cars.

All we need now is for Microsoft to put up the subscription for Office 365.

This subscription pricing for software is a real money spinner for the manufacturers, instead of you buying once you effectively buy every year.

This is my problem with the subscription model.
It is not in reality a realistic way of valuing software.  If you use software occasionally it encourages people to not purchase but to use free software that is less good (stifles innovation and small companies) or worse the pirating of the software.
Adobe originally said that they expected that the subscription model would reduce software pricing and also stop pirating.  Neither of these have been achieved.  Therefore I purchase my new software from PhaseOne CaptureOne Pro and Serif Affinity Photo.

As a matter of interest, what can Lightroom/Photoshop do that Darktable can't?

Photoshop CS6 that I have has more functionality than I could probably ever learn.  It does pixel level editing.

Darktable is closer to Lightroom than Lightroom.

You should take a look at LightZone, especially if you like b&w.
