A new Nikon AW1 camera that can be submerged!!
http://nikonrumors.com/2013/09/19/nikon-1-aw1-underwater-mirrorless-camera-and-two-1-nikkor-aw-lenses-officially-announced.aspx/

No good for me as I dive deeper than that but for most people it will be a very rugged camera.

The camera is based around the Nikon1 series, so has the smaller sensor size found in the Nikon V1 and J1 cameras.
I think that this will be a good entry level camera for people stepping up from phonecameras and P'n'S.

Notice it has its own range of interchangeable lenses that are waterproof to 20m.

JK-

You hit it...great starter kit for divers. All they need is the wide angle and a good strobe

The strobe is coming soon. i have seen some pictures of it and it is a small unit but it is very nicely designed.

Wide angle is a problem as the sensor makes a x3 multiplier so they really need a 5mm lens.

The problem will be that to use the AW1 underwater you need to use the specific AW underwater lenses. At present there are only 2.

The biggest problem is that no one from Nikon has actually taken the camera out diving. Consensus management has dictated that divers and in fact their whole customer base are yearning for more telophoto lenses with no macro capabilities.

Indeed the camera seems to be more aimed at entry level divers and snorkelers.  Entry level divers really should be more worried about management of themselves and their buddies.  To add photography into the mix is adding complexity that can lead to accidents.

For myself I shoot with a Canon G12 in a housing for my semi serious stuff, for the serious stuff I use a D70 or D90 in a SeaSea housing with either a 14mm or 10/20mm or a 105 Macro lens.  Anything in between is less useful.

That's why in my few excursions under I've never taken a camera. although I have dived quite a bit it's a couple of times a year, never being intense enough to become properly competant.

I'd happily take this snorkeling however.
