on my old d300s i could use the rear button to a/f and the normal front button to fire the shutter ,does anyone know the settings sequence to do this on the d7100 to take it a bit further on the d300s it was a/f on the rear button and still retaining a/f and shutter on the front button .i found this super for tracking birds in flight .can it be done on the 7100

Do you mean the AFL/AEL Button ? You can assign the Fn button to do special controls via the CSM menus.

it seems it will only a/f on the rear button though jonathon ,not still retain a/f and shoot on the front as well ,will have a play when time permits

On the D600 setting the AE-L/AF-L to AF-ON initiates autofocus. The shutter release can not be used to focus. Pg244 users manual. It,s probably the same on all of the later models.

Yes that is true. If you use the AEL/AEF button for AF then you lose this on the shutter release. Seems like another nice firmware enhancement to allow either/or/both.

to be honest ,my replacement camera is working fine ,its taking good sharp images ,but something is still missing and i just cannot put my finger on it .i think i will lose enthusiasm with this model rather quickly ,the month with the dodgy camera put me on my guard . and although this is turning out mega sharp shots consistently theres something missing from them ,it could be the time of year etc so i will give it a bit longer but i just cannot gel with this camera at all . been thinking about returning to canon full stop and this could be the kick up the backside it takes to do it

What do you think a Canon will deliver that a Nikon wont ? For me there is little to choose between Canon or Nikon except for the different control layouts and interfaces. I prefer the Nikons. The Canon twirly dial is a wind up for me but I can see that some people prefer it to the up/down/sideways of the Nikon menus.

no real idea jonathon ,as i said its not i.q as at 24 mp the resolving detail of this camera is superb ,i have mainly been using it with the 1.4 tc so far ,going to see what it can do with the 1.7 when conditions/sightings improve as that was my favourite setup before i.e 300 f4 + 1.7tc .even if it means using a mono or tri pod to get the sharpness ,or perhaps thats what it is theres to much detail/sharpness now .its one of those things that i can't really define .might even go back to a d300s .just don't know

I need to use my D300 more now that I have sorted out the exposure bracketing problem I was suffering from. I'm sure there is a D400 in the wings for the start of 2014.
