Seems to be to allow support for the new 800mm f5.5 lens. https://nikoneurope-en.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/55915

Well I am disappointed that there are not more fixes or additional functions added to the D3, D3X or D3s cameras. I really do think that sales of the 800mm f5.6 AFS G are very limited but I guess they need to cover cameras that might be used by agency shooters.

Seriously of course this is important to the new 800mm lens owners who will be expecting compatibility across the range.

Robert, re: compatibility across the range. As I have not yet seen a user manual for the 800mm lens, I still wonder why it may not be compatible with some camera's. Note that something similar was the case when the PC-E lenses were introduced. Regards, Gilbert

I guess that some of the use issues may be that hanging such a heavy weight off the lens mount may cause problems. I dont know but it is a guess!

JK, re: such a heavy weight That goes for more than one body-lens combination, however: with an 800mm lens any body would be stretched (grin). On the positive side: with something like a D3000 or D600 on an 800mm lens one may not notice any body attached. Regards, GIlbert

Yes very true, Gilbert. I recently had my hands on a Nikon D600 and was mazed how small and light it was compared to a D800 or D3S.
