been offered a D300s at a good price ,anyone have or had one ,know about them ,any problems to look out for ,it will be sub £400 so is that the right price for one with roughly 90,000 clicks ..
how does quality etc stand up against the d7000 i now use ,will be buying this as a back up anyway to replace the wifes d200 ,which i bought from the same guy .

I have a D300 which is the same as a D300s but without the video.
I would say the camera is better built than the D7000 but not as well specified. I think from results I have seen that the D300 is not so good as the D7000 but improves on D200 if you want better high ISO performance.

If you have the high end accessories for Nikons that use the 10pin connector then the D300 scores over the D7000 that lacks these features.

picked it up this afternoon jonathan ,got it with two genuine nikon batteries fully boxed etc plus a 18-70 stock lens in good condition also boxed ,for under £400 ,done a few test shots in rapidly failing light and amazed at the fast a/f and high speed burst mode .both far superior to the d7000 ,obviously its a step back in terms of megapixels but i think its going to be going places with me a lot

I seldom use LiveView. I dont know why as it certainly should allow improved focus accuracy under certain conditions.

Fox,

re: had one ,know about them
Please consider that the D300 (when launched) it was the DX brother of the Professional D3 camera.

As you state, AF and pure speed are much better than most consumer cameras.
If you appreciate those qualities over the marketing and journalist inspired megapixel-hype, you will love and cherish your new purchase.

The number of exposures you mention should not be a worry, unless the camera has been mistreated in the past, or your aim is to do huge numers of exposures, like some sports photographers.

Regards, Gilbert

thanks for that gilbert ,the camera has been well looked after and regularly serviced by nikon .so i am hoping its going to be a favourite for birds in flight ,even my mighty d7000 has its limitations re burst speed plus small buffer and a/f speed so i am hoping this is going to compensate on that side of things
it helps immensely that i know the previous owner and the camera history

You will love it. I always preferred it to the D7000.
