This afternoon using the D200 with a Sandisk Exreme III 4Gb card freshly formatted in camera. I took about 15 images then the camera refused to make another exposure, I checked the top screen and where the number of exposures is usually shown it displayed (I think) REC I tried to view the images I had exposed but the message on the screen said 'No images on this card'. As I was photographing one of my Marlin cars, I was not too concerned about the loss of the images so I reformatted the card again. Normality was restored and I continued photographing the car. I did not remove the card or check the seating. I took a further 80 exposures with no issues. The battery was slightly down but at least half of the pictures were taken with the built in flash and the battery indicator still shows about one third remaining. Any ideas?

Did you accidentally shut off the camera before the buffer was finished loading the data on the card? I've done that and had the camera lock up on me as well.

Not impossible Ed, I was clambering over and under the car in quite rugged conditions I could have switched it off accidentally?

I've had a card fail completely but I've never had one do what you experienced.

What free software for Mac is there to recover images from the card? I used to have 'Image Rescue' but it wasn't updated a while back for the newer OS's so it's no linger viable. Also it's on a tiny disk which you can only use with tray loading drives which I no longer have. Even though I have reformatted the card the images will probably still be there.

I use one of the following. ImageRescue DiskDrill FileSalvage FileSalvage version 7 does a very good/best job and gets most stuff back.

Thanks JK, I'm sick of d/ling 'free' software only to find it's free but does nothing unless you pay for it. I only want to recover a dozen or so images, they are there I have seen them but I'm not paying $25 for a few images I don't actually need, I just wanted to extract them to get a clue what went wrong. The last d/l was free but it's a command line interface, not my cuppa! JK would probably be at home with it it runs on Linux too. The San Disk free software provided with all their high end CF cards works very well. I had a student on one of my studio workshops who lost all his days work when placing his card in car reader on his laptop. We were able to use the rescue disc and recovered several thousand images from all previous shoots!

I have it Graham, it has worked well on the rare occasion I have needed it. However it won't run on any Mac I have. I contacted Image rescue because the software won't update with their updaters. I got the probably predictable response that they don't do free updates for free software. In other words the bundled Image Rescue software you get with a Sandisk card is a fully functional free trial with limited life. I recently got a new Sandisk SD 16Gb card but they don't seem to include the recovery disk with SD cards. I don't need a new CF card so it looks like I will have to do without. I keep planning to get Disk Warrior, perhaps this might be another reason if it will recover CF Cards. There is always something else higher up the priorities list.
