Well I’ve just pulled the trigger on a Z9 and selling the Z8. I found that with some of my old heavy lenses it was front heavy. We will see how we get on.

Should have said you were looking. My Z9 is low, low mileage and whilst it is nice would have been happy to cross trade with a little drop of money. The Z9 is great and with the bigger battery you never need to carry extras like you do with Z8. I am sure you will enjoy the Z9.

Congrats with that new gem Ian...as a Pro You would have bought that straight from the shelf I suphose. I am all about the SLR ...I would not even look at those Zorro camera`s,Nope !!..Not me...and then, just recently, I discovered the Z-line has an advantage ( that`s my evil alter ego saying that `fcoz )..still, something about that the sensor sees eventual focus-shift and therefor ,that is no problem any longer,which could be under certain circumstances, macro for example, but most of all, they`ve got ..Vibration Reduction ...now , several Z- camera`s as 2nd handers have shown up,quite a few actually, now even J K wants to ditch his , why is that ?... Yes, the EVF is no match for the SLR, but then as a - specialist - camera perhaps, next to the slr,..personally, my rock-solid stance in favor of the SLR is wavering somewhat...now true to my - only the flagship is good enough for my tripod philosophy -, it would have to be a Z9 ,..but even the Z9 has shown up as a 2ndhander...still pricey `tho...but now I`m wondering/Hoping if at X-mas time a low mileage cheap-skate Z9 will show up ... Yes, I have stopped dreaming about the D6, they`re mucho expensive but also, no VR, having several VR lenses ( Tamron 15-30 f2.8 G2...Nikon 24-70 f2.8 ...70-200 f4.0...200-400 f4.0 vr1 ) I have Discovered its virtues and view VR as the biggest invention since the advent of Digital, and that ExtremeLowLight HandHeld photography is well within reach,... handholding that hefty 200-400 at 1/30 renders images so Sharp , simply astounding...now, if only my PC(E) Nikkors had VR, which they would have when mounted on that Z9,... ...gawd, I`m floating in the Univers ,I am...

The truth is we all have to come to these decisions in our own time. We all will have trigger points for change and inevitably change comes with compromises. I am trialling a Fuji XS20. The image quality out of the camera is the best I’ve seen. I simply don’t need to do any adjustments in Phshp…except for the most extreme lighting situations or when I want to fiddle with the composition. Fuji cameras and lenses are the lightest and ideal for me as I carry the camera in my hand all the time. However, it’s a DX camera…which means a darker/smaller viewfinder; I need a 16mm lens for even average wide angle shots; some of the buttons/ controls can be irritating. In contrast, the Sony A1 is FX; all the controls are perfectly arranged and more configurable to suit my choices. But its 4x the price of the Fuji. With its lenses it is at least 50% heavier than the equivalent Fuji set up. Sure it will do a lot better at action and tracking photography….but how much of that do I do now? It’s all about coming to a decision about what better suits your ongoing needs and getting the camera system that feels the best fit or has the least irritations. Nothings perfect. I am not sure I need the Sony. I only use it now for speed or distance related subjects. It’s interesting to hear Iain’s reasoning for going to the Z9. One of the reasons I abandoned Fuji and went back to Nikons some years ago was that the Fuji light bodies were imbalanced when I used large telephotos on it. It’s the reason I haven’t bought a big lens for this Fuji and still keep the Sony for telephoto work.

XS20 is a nice camera to hold and it uses the new higher capacity battery. How are you finding it? I prefer my Nikon Zf as it is more like a Nikon FM and very like my Fuji XT5. However the AF on the Fuji is noticeably less quick than the Nikon Zf/Z8/Z9. The Z8 is very similar to the D850 in size and weight. The Z9 is similar to D3 weight and size wise but it is much more capable.

In fairness I haven’t used it in speed challenging situations. I had been considering getting a longer lens for it, but my previous experience with the slow AF of the XT2, I had back in the day (which was part instrumental in me coming back to the D850) has tempered my enthusiasm. Iain’s comment about lens balance with the Z8 is another reminder of how the Fuji felt unbalanced with a big lens and your comment that the AF of the XT5 (which I guess would be the same as X20) is inferior to Nikon Zs, make me close my wallet on the thought of a long lens purchase.
