Here's a slight departure... I've been playing with the wife's Panasonic FZ2000. Actually trying to familiarise myself with it, such that when she says 'it's not working properly' in the middle of nowhere, I have a fighting chance of sorting it out. Specifically I have been looking at video settings and came across 2 effects that I don't understand. So you video experts please explain .... When I set her camera to still photography the zoom range in the viewfinder is 24-480. If I switch to 4K video the zoom range changes to 37-740. It visibly zooms in the viewfinder. I don't understand why it's doing that? I thought 4K had more pixels? Surely zooming in changes that? I then wondered how it was achieving that zoom. Was it optical or digital? As we know digital zooms are always inferior to optical zooms. How could a superior format use inferior zooming? But here's the thing... when I take a frame grab from a 4K video, the image quality is just as good as a standard still shot. So the 4K zoom effect has given her 50% more reach without quality loss. I should add that this camera can actually take 4K still photographs without the need for frame grabbing a video when we would expect to have motion blur issues in some frames. But I thought I would try the worst case scenario and just grab a frame. And it was fine. Don't understand ![]()

Is it filming in asp. ratio 16:9 then ?...that could explain some of it... I`m filming with smart phones , Huawei/Leica and Motorola/Hasselblad ( I have given up on filming with the D3s ) and with the M/H , photo is on 3:4 but filming is with 16:9 , but with the H/L , all is on 16:9...so far I `have n`t figured out either why/what the messrs. manufacturers are voodooing with. I think that You are Brave, filming with a photo camera. Anyone knows /care to explain ,about that video stuff ?

I have a panasonic g80 which also shoots in 4K I don't fully understand it but the few results I have from it are very good . it also has the ability for pre.burst where it takes shots micro seconds before you depress the shutter and after it to .it actually works but how ? beats me .. at one point this week I was considering selling all my nikon gear again and investing in either a Olympus or panasonic top of the range camera either a panasonic g9 ,olympus omd1-mkii or a e.mix as I have there best long range lens the Leica 100-400 .. need to try one first though .. I honestly cant see any difference in i.q after post processing in either nikon/canon/ full frame or MFT gear .yes there probably is if you pixel nit pick but in general use no.as below one from the garden this week ![]()

" Selling All nikon gear " ...I know the feeling, if it was n´t for some Specialized lenses like the PC Nikkors and the Medical Nikkor 200 f5.6 ,...and a good deal of Nostalgia, I probably would. Some of the New Equipment is So Good...and yet, from all of the equipment I have, Only the Nikon`s Fire right away, all other stuff is putting me on hold.

All makes of camera are very good these days. It is only the control layout and interface that is different. I would use Canon stuff but their control interface does not work for me. They make some superb lenses especially the PC lenses and very good zooms. No point in changing if you are getting good results already.

Assembling a Camera/Lens rig for an afternoon walk is one thing,..but going long Haul ( several weeks ) on my own , staying in cheap skate hotels , meaning I Carry Everything , and I mean Everything !!...not even leaving a battery in the room, is a Whole Different matter. Camera(s) ..Lenses...Chargers...Batteries..mini-computer...and the like on my back , does make me take a Good Hard Look at how to...it takes me several weeks to assemble my long Haul outfit, I kid you Not ! Although I carefully plan meticulously, still, I encounter situations Unthought of, 11/2 year ago in the Philippines , I zip-lined...climbed a small mountain..got lost in a Large Dark Eerie neighborhood , while having my d3s with 55 f1.2...pc28 f3.5...20 f2.8... two flashes...Bessa L with Heliar f4.5...Charger ..4 en-EL4a...paraphernalia ( film..two flashes....Lunasix F ..etc. )...all in a LowePro AW slingback..., smartphone in shirt pocket...moving about in 30 C plus. Although it was to be a Photo Safari , I can Assure you that it was not always what I had in mind... Every gram counts,...Nikon coming out with something that is Different and yet the Same will only add to items adding Weight and Craving space , and will drive some photogs to other makes...I for one, have found stuff to Replace some of my photographic Nikon Equipment , actually already , most of my photo`s are taken with non-nikon equipment, Not that I have given up on Nikon, it`s Application is just Delegated to Special jobs. I have just Invested in a TENBA roller/backback to Hold my D3x or D3s ...Angle Finder...PC-E 24 f3.5...pc 28 f3.5 ...PC-E micro 85 f2.8...55 f1.2..TC201...TC16B...mebbe the 14-24 f2.8 or 20 f2.8 ( undecided yet )...MH21...four en-el4...Bessa L & Heliar 15 f4.5.. That`s for now, in a day or so the outfit could be different....

back on Topic,.. I have read that some camera`s , when switched to video-mode , use a smaller part of the sensor , so as to be able to correct for camera movements keeping it Horizontal...I think it`s called Horizontal Stabilization. When such is the case, than that could explain why the Lens has become longer.

4K is 4096 x 2160 pixels - ie 8.4375 megapixels, on a 1" sensor giving 20.1 megapixels, the video is using less than half the sensor and I guess the cropping is what gives you the "apparent" zoom. Bit like using an FX lens on an APS-C camera.

just been reading up on the spec on the new Olympus em1x and its extremely tempting up to 60fps or 18fps with tracking , and although only a 20mp sensor it cn shoot 50mp or 80mp files out-resolving anything else on the market . I know that Andy rouse is using one to good effect at the moment ,he is in Svalbard at the moment but I will see if I can arrange a meet up when he returns . plus they are only £2500 bnib. the other options are a Panasonic g9 or a olympus omd1-mkii most wildlife guys favour the latter though . there is also the Nikon mirrorless z6/7 to take into account but gut instinct says they have a lot of catching up to do .
