Nikon announced this item. https://www.dpreview.com/news/7401041032/nikon-claimed-the-1-spot-in-the-full-frame-camera-market-for-december-2017on FF cameras #1 in December 2017. This is really good news for us all as it means that Nikon are actually producing the cameras that the marketplace wants and needs. For me personally it vindicates my decision to have Nikon FF as my main working camera with a D500 as the second string but for my travel and general use I prefer the lightness of my Fujis. Since I effectively have a 'perfect set' for both camera ranges I am very happy and need no further purchases except for the hopefully rare events of camera/lens death!

While I have never even picked up a D850 by reading the reports that are about it seeme the best all round camera on the market.

I would say it is the most complete Nikon. Why anyone wants a D5 would be a question I would ask? The D5 seems like a heavy, expensive camera with less utility.

If I was still working then I would go for the D5 but at £2k more than the D850 I think anyone else would have to think if it was worth it.

TRUST !!....I do Not trust anything but a Big D Nikon when about..four mnth.s in far east..currently Pilipinas , I am Glad to have the D3S with me..and a Bessa L with Heliar 15 f4.5 , my Only regret is that weight restrictions forced the D3X to stay put.

Nice one! We have just booked a villa in Spain for 2 weeks early Sept just North of Ronda and hope to get good use with of my Nikons. We are crossing over from Portsmouth to Santander then taking 3 days to travel South in our car, all new places for me!

Can't speak for the D850 specifically but I think this applies. The focus points are exactly the same between the D5 (FX) and the D500 (DX) meaning with the FX sensor the focus points are clustered in the centre with the periphery bare of focus points. With the DX, the focus points cover almost the entire screen. This means, effectively, a target bird is more likely to be picked up anywhere in the viewfinder of a DX camera, whereas with FX you HAVE to keep the target bird in the centre of the viewfinder to stand any chance of locking on. Once locked on, the camera will track the target bird almost magically anywhere within the AF point area. But with FX, the AF point area is effectively quite a bit smaller. Edit: To improve clarity.
