My little Sony RX10 is pin sharp Zeiss 24-200mm equivalent with 20.9 MP is super compact and A3+ are of a very high standard. Shoots 1920x1080 full HD movie with good steady shot and first class sound I understand the latest model is even better but see no reason to change. Yes it would be good for Nikon to do one. I had a Nikon V1 but changed for this little Sony 3 years ago and it is seriously better!

This content was on the NikonRumors website. Seems like Nikon has found the need to do a major rethink about their business. Several Japanese news outlets published an article based on an interview with Nikon executives. Here are the key points from a Google translation (if you have a better translation, please post it in the comments section): The Nikon camera business is undergoing a major restructuring. This is a quote: "bringing in multiple mirrorless cameras at an early stage" - to me this means announcing multiple mirrorless cameras soon. Nikon is taking an aggressive approach to rebuild their camera business. Nikon has no plans for closing domestic or overseas manufacturing plants at the present time. In the future Nikon will concentrate their resources on medium to high-end DSLR cameras and lenses as well as mirrorless cameras. Nikon will have fewer models in the future. Nikon still wants to develop a high-end compact camera.

In view of the above I guess we will see fewer camera bodies coming but with the content also more in the pro-sumer and professional range. This implies that the D3xxx and D5xxx ranges may disappear. If this is the case then maybe we can expect to see...... A D5 DSLR and a D5M mirrorless camera A D500 DSLR and a D500M mirrorless camera and the like..... Of course the step to mirrorless is only the first of the technology steps that they need to incorporate as the technologies change. New technologies coming are: Higher dynamic range sensors for all cameras with options to save image as TIFF (8/16bit), RAW (12/14/16bit), JPG (8bit). There is global shutter which allows flash sync at all speeds and without the need for a shutter. EVF improvements so that the optical screen can be removed and to provide a real time view of image being captured with no blackout and with EV compensation applied so WYSIWYG in the final image. And more.

I recall the difficulty Nikon put themselves under with high ISO noise, when hoards of their users moved over to Canon in the absence of an acceptable Nikon product. Miraculously the revolutionary D3 came from nowhere. It did the trick and the repentant drifters, returned. They clearly made two or three (reluctant) steps in one move to not just catch up but overtake (for some time) the competition. It's hard not to draw a similar comparison now, where Nikon have allowed the Sonys, Fujis et al to take the lead and sell quality mirrorless cameras while Nikon drifted along in the old fashioned way....flirting with new developments and offering periodic upgrades to their range, in their desire to milk the consumers by drip feeding, rather than offering significant revolutionary steps. We all know they are 3 or more years ahead of their current offerings. They could take bigger, bolder steps ....and probably would regain their foothold. They may like to call it restructuring their business or whatever. I prefer to consider it as opening a floodgate periodically, to appease the drifters with stuff they had been stockpiling for 2020! Of course they would then need to get on with the next developments, to catch up, having released their 'reserves', all of which would be expensive. However, I can't help feeling if they had released a top end mirrorless last year, I for one, wouldn't have considered and subsequently invested several thousand pounds in Fuji. Give the customers a quantum change and they stay happy for a lot longer...giving time develop the next step. Bigger steps are required!!

I agree Eric. We may be in a similar lull to the pre-D3 era. Well at this point in time I see no need to spend money on new photo equipment for my Fuji or Nikon gear.
