Nikon announce the D5600. It is a 24MP camera with a few new features over and avove what is in the D5500. http://nikon.com/news/2016/1110_dslr_01.htm

Is it me or do these new models seem to be shrinking under the pentaprism which now seems to stand out ...like the rock of Gibraltar ? Its as if they are trying to match the mirrorless for weight and dimension...except for the carbuncle on top. And the other thing.....why are Nikon selling the idea that a 24mp camera is ideal for social media? Surely a phone or iPad would suffice...with no need for snapbridge or any connectivity to a secondary smart device. Maybe a great intro camera for someone wanting to learn photography but not the sort of thing you stuff in your handbag for a night out with friends.

One of the things the Snapbridge interface does is resize the image to 2MP or is it 2MB for social media use. Whilst that is fine the Bluetooth/Snapbridge is a complete PITA. I agree that an iPad is a better prospect for social media use.

That's the problem isn't it...adding a PITA stage to getting images from a bulky camera to Twitter. People today have enough trouble keeping their phones when out and about...can just imagine them lugging a DSLR about with them. It just doesn't seem well thought out.

I have a feeling misused or misleading terminology is getting in the way of a clear understanding of what I believe Nikon are trying to achieve. What I think Nikon are aiming the D5600 camera at is people like myself, people who are dedicated posters to specialist forums and blogs, not twitter, whatever that is... A specific example being a car body builder who posts regularly some of his extraordinary work repairing and re-creating old or specialised car bodies near Ipswich. Initially he used his phone camera, then a small digital camera, eventually, frustrated by the limitations, he grasped the nettle and obtained a basic DSLR possibly a D5100, can't remember right now. The quality of his photographs improved almost to that of his panel beating. He even took some lessons at his local college, where he taught welding at night classes. This was the reason I got my D3100, to illustrate my car building activities in forums on which I participate. I don't want to expose my 'good' cameras and lenses to the harsh environment of welding, engineering and the rough and tumble of the workshop. While this may be regarded as 'social media' by some, I doubt many Facebook users would bother with a D5600 and the range of lenses (and skills) needed to gain full advantage of that camera. I dont regard specialised forums (such as this one) as social media. I am told social media is where people tell the world what they had for breakfast and gripping stuff like that. As for quality, I process the NEF's in Lr and then take a selective screen shot (Shift + Command + 4) then post upload that to Flicker, from where I link the image to my post. That process is quick, painless and provides a way to circumvent the inevitable degradation inflicted by forum image software.

Still won't update from my D5300 which I really like. No GPS, 4k, useless Snapbridge, at least to me, still 24mp, and a smaller body size, which is what my XL glove sized hands really need.

Yes, definitely, it's just about to be displayed on another 72 DPI device! At whatever size it was on the original screen, as it was captured. If you feed images through the forum software they loose much of their tonal range and are downsized to a 'uniform' size to minimise the storage overhead and present a universally suitable and fast to load image. Probably geared to dial up web access, not todays broadband speeds. Take a look at this thread on Little Terns. That's interesting, I wasn't aware the software was so damaging. I will have to look at my recent postings via the forum and see how they compare with screen grabs. I wonder, do other members take extraordinary steps to preserve the quality of their posted images?

I amalways disappointed when I see my images on webpages compared to what I see on my editing screen. Forum software can really damage your image.
