If you feed images through the forum software they loose much of their tonal range and are downsized to a 'uniform' size to minimise the storage overhead and present a universally suitable and fast to load image. Probably geared to dial up web access, not todays broadband speeds.

That's interesting, I wasn't aware the software was so damaging. I will have to look at my recent postings via the forum and see how they compare with screen grabs.
I wonder, do other members take extraordinary steps to preserve the quality of their posted images?
At least with degraded images they are less likely to be plagerized or improperly reposted.
