Some links to info and comparison of CF, SD and XQD cards.

http://petapixel.com/2011/12/08/compactflash-cards-to-be-replaced-with-the-smaller-xqd-format/

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_memory_cards

I cant find any pinout details for the XQD cards.

I did a quick ebay search for adapters for CF to XQD and vice versa but came up with no hits.
Plenty of adapters for SD and TD or microSD to CF cards adapters. I use these in my D3, D3S and D800 as I prefer to buy SD cards.

Bit more digging shows the XQD to be 16 bit PCI Express card.
The pinouts for this are here.

I am very interested as it my solve some of the noise problems I am getting with the D810 in poor light. I will wait till the first reviews and the must have it rush is over and prices settle down.
I have not used XLD cards myself but a sports photographer friend with a D4S said they are very fast and had no failures compared to CF cards. They are also a must have if you do video with the camera.

So, are you saying that the old wisdom of ...the smaller the pixels, the poorer the low light quality....is still correct?

Eric the problem is there as with bird photography you are forced even with a 700mm lens to blow up a fair bit. Also fasst moving so high shutter speeds so even in good light you need at least 800 ISO and 1/1000se or faster. If as happens the light drops just as you line up a good shot camera goes to widest f no as I work on shutter priority you then find no time to reset. Result is pull back on NEF later and if you need to plus 1.5 or even 2 stops to correct noise comes! See pix! This is 25% of a D810 image pulled back +1.5 stops in post.

I think it's more involved than just pixel size, processors and software do a lot more now days.
Look at the D1, huge pixels but poor hi ISO.

I agree it is more than just the sensor (12MP v. 16MP v 21MP) and its pixel size and the support electronics (EXPEED version 3, 4, 5) as the the software also comes into play.

This is exemplified with the Fuji X series cameras all the same sensor (more or less).  Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop ACR  still cant beat the solutions offered in other RAW softwares.

I am wondering as there was a D3 (FX), D700 (FX) and D300(S) (DX), so will there be a D5 (FX), D550 or ?D850? (FX) and D500 (DX).

A D550 would be a FX 21MP FX camera with all the other features of the D500.

B&H Photo has two separated pre-order listings for the D5, one for dual XQD and another for dual CF. Both are priced at $6500 US.

I'm still using my D800 and DF and will continue to do so.

The XQD cards rated write speed are 150MB/sec compared with the fastest SD card (UHSii) or CF card Extreme Pro from Sandisk which is 100MB/sec.
