Hello everyone!

I'm very very new to the photography world. I've always liked to take pictures, but never really thought about what goes into taking great pictures. I just recently purchased a Nikon D3100 (FINALLY!). I've really enjoyed it so far. I haven't been able to spend too much time with it thanks to my job, but I want to learn all I can.

There is not one specific direction I'm looking to take when it comes to taking pictures. I'd like to be able to do a little bit of everything. One of the first things I did was take pictures of water droplets because it's something I've always wanted to try. I think I had a couple of really successful shots for a first timer!

I do have a couple of questions that y'all will hopefully be able to help out with :)

Hope everyone is well!

Thanks,
-Melissa

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Ask away and don't think your question might be silly, we have all had to learn, there is no such thing as a silly question.

I just recently got a D3100, a couple of months ago, I tend to use it as a family camera. I got it to make videos but I haven't made one yet, I have been too busy so far. Summer just around the corner so perhaps I will get a chance.

A pic I took of my daughter and her boyfriend at her 18th birthday in April.

Robert,

Thanks again. I will and already do have several questions. I just need to find the appropriate place to put them!

Let me know how those videos work out if you get around to making one! That's something I want to try as well. I have a youtube channel that has videos of me singing and usually I use my macbook to record the videos, but the poor thing is getting old. Figured I'd give the camera a try.

Cute picture! Love the crown! lol =]

The D3100 has been taking some very nice pictures for me so far. I have been slightly obsessed with water droplets. I attached one that I framed and gave to a friend for his birthday because he said he really loved it. Remember, I'm only a beginner :P Don't be too harsh on me!

That's a great shot Melissa, nothing to be harsh about. What lens did you use, andI assume there was a flash?

Thank you, richw!

I only have the 18-55mm lens that came with my camera, so that's what I used. There was a flash; you're correct. Flash and related settings is one of the things I need to figure out more. Going to try to put up a post on somewhere on here tomorrow to see if someone can help! -- Definitely like it here so far!

Have you looked at printing on metal at all? I have done a couple of shots and I'm a big fan. There is a company I use here in AUS, but I have seen advertisements for a company in the US that does them:

I really think this shot would look awesome printed this way, it lends itself to that. The other good thing about printing on mentalist how light the the finished product is, makes hanging even a large image a breeze.

I've never even heard of metal prints! I took a look at the website and it looks really cool. May have to think about doing that at some point =]

Thanks for the tip!

Melissa,
Great shot. Very atmospheric. Usually these shots are almost overlit!!

Dont feel daunted to post a new topic in one of the other forums.
In fact why not start with a Droplets one in the Cameras forum.
