has anyone got a AA battery box for a nikon mb-d10 battery grip lying around spare , for a D 300/300S

Yes depending on the make of battery grip then each is different. I wouldnt recommend using AA batteries unless you have Eneloop rechargeables.

not even sure I need to use the grip TBH never did before . oh well worth a try

You might fare better searching for the correct item code MS-D10.
I agree with JK, third party items are not likely to fit.
On batteries:
I have a battery-holder for a different camera and I found that the freshness of batteries used can be critical.
