We currently have about 62 emoticons available. Some appear to be duplicated, 'hardhat' for one. Others are very similar and rarely used.

I am trying to find a way of rationalising the selection so we have the ones we use regularly.

The post composition window seems to accommodate 40 emoticons. Perhaps that would be a sensible number to have so we don't have to go to the second 'More' selection window on a daily basis.

Seasonal emoticons could be added and only be seen in the 'More' selection window.

I ran a topic in the old forum to provide for members an opportunity to choose what emoticons came forward to the new forum.

I have started to assess that list and here are the results:

 4 votes. While this is a very popular emoticon it doesn't sit well here in the new forum because it has a white background, personally I don't like the shaded background of the forum in my opinion it makes it harder to read the text, but that's another topic.

 3 votes.

;dumpbricks; 2 votes.

:hardhat: 2 votes. (There seem to be two in the current collection.)

:-D (Very Happy) 3 votes

zzsmallthumbszz (small thumbs up) 1 vote.

:Moreconfused: 3 votes. Similar to :hmmm: 2 Votes. Think I prefer :hmmm:

:wine: 2 votes.

 2 votes.

:jumpforjoy: 1 vote.

:letsplay: 1 vote

:shades: 1 vote

 1 vote

:readthis: and :rtfm: are vey similar I think I prefer :rtfm: which has 1 vote.

xxduckxx is a silly but nice one. 1 vote.

:pissed: Is very expressive and on occasions needed. 1 vote.

R© (Shutterbug) Essential on a photo forum I would have thought?

Judith's :handbagged: We must have this to avoid a handbagging!

:diggingahole:

 1 vote and :cheerssmall: are much the same, for me the smaller one is just as good and doesn't mess with the text so much.

:nonono: 1 vote. Can be handy. I think I prefer Dylans :negativenod: It's more subtle and smaller.

 2 votes.

:seesaw: 1 vote.

:innocent: 1 vote.

:gimme: 1 vote.

We didn't select an OFF TOPIC emoticon but I think the old !!offtopic!! emoticon was very good and to the point.

Also, in the same vein the :stop: sign didn't figure, hopefully it won't be needed here, right?

That is about 26 emoticons for a start.

Others that I like include:

:diggingahole:

:praying: Not sure why there are two, one left one right?

:needsahug:

:bowing:

;-)

So what other suggestions are there so we can create a clear list for JK and Steve.

Robert,

One point of note:
When one clicks Reply, loading the emoticons seem to take some time, affecting the nice snappyness of the new site.
Maybe making the images a little smaller would reduce the time it takes to load them.

One more remark: moving images distract from the real content of the items. (maybe I'm old or old-fashioned)

Regards, Gilbert

Yes I agree Gilbert, There is a lot to be said for the original basic but still cute and expressive emoticons.

I think we sometimes forget that these 'features' have an impact on the download speeds and some of us don't have i7 Quad processors with terabytes of memory.

That said, with one exception the other evening when it went slow on me, I have found this forum very snappy and responsive despite having a sub 1Mb broadband connection.

BTW: Steve did say to me that the changing and editing of emoticons on this software is more difficult. And it is.

I can see how to upload them but I cant see how to add the new uploads to a list.

No, it's in the list just above the Angel and Devil on the seesaw.

I have used the same identity as they had on the old forum so to ease the task.

I realise Steve said it's an onerous task, that was why I offered to undertake it (under instruction of course!).

I have no wish to add to your and Steve's workload for what is a relatively unimportant and possibly time consuming task. I may have a few idle days ahead, I could deal with it then.

I have sent a PM to Steve already about the emoticons and also the gallery enhancements. I can do the changes if necessary but probably need a bit of coaching from Steve.

We are now getting to the point where once the gallery enhancements are started and I can start to test then we can then think about closing the old server.

It doesnt make sense to keep it open and running. I still havent heard back from Armand about the backup copy of the old forum. I think the server admin there is being difficult.

By close I hope you mean only to stop posting?

Currently I have to log in to read threads.

I still intend to retrieve content. I have spent hours over the last couple of days looking through the older posts and some of the lens threads I indexed.

I see no reason why access for posting can't be stopped now. It would save us fielding posters who didn't realise the forum has moved. It would save their frustration too, posting for no reason.

That said, this morning there were ten Anonymous Users browsing, there are six right now.

They got dumped on you Jonathan. I went over to the old forum and retrieved them, and uploaded them.
