Might be in for a speed bump soon, just went out to the shops, BT were pulling a new cable into the duct which runs past the end our our street.  I stopped and asked the man if it was our new fiber connection. Apparently it is, won't be on just yet but maybe in a couple of weeks... I won't hold my breath because it was supposed to be on by June 2012 but at least it's a step nearer.

Your upload speed is quite fast compared to the download speed? Or conversely your download speed is slow compared to the upload speed.
My 3G service is 10x faster at downloading than uploading....your service is only 3x.?????
What's normal?

300 to 400Kb/sec or 0.3 to 0.4Mb/sec Up and 7Mb/sec Down would be typical within a mile or so of the exchange. I am about 4 miles from the exchange and apparently the main underground cables are in very poor condition.

I am told the modem in the exchange 'negotiates' a reliable speed with the modem in my house over a week or so which maximizes the speed for the line conditions.

The up speed is rarely impeded and is usually much lower than the down speed. The ratio between the two isn't a relevant factor. At Ulverston it was 0.4Mb Up and 8Mb/sec Down. The exchange was just round the corner.

When the fiber does come I MAY get 10Mb Up?

How does one check "run a speed test"?

http://www.speedtest.net

Go to this URL and register, it will then remember all your tests and give you a graph of your speeds over time.

There are many distracting adverts and stuff on the page but it's the best one I have found so far.

As you can see the downloads fluctuate, this is because they are running at the limit of the wiring, because the uploads are comfortably within the capacity they don't fluctuate much.
