Most of the trials Marlins are at least 1800cc some even 3500 ....If I was building one I'd like a Rover straight 6 in there. I used to have a Rover 2.6S years ago, lovely engine. Come to think of it though, you don't see many Marlins these days.

There were about twenty Martlins on the smaller Edinburgh Trial a couple of weeks ago from a total entry of about 200 cars and 75 motorbikes. It's the endurance bit I like. The events start at about midnight and run through the night, visiting steep, muddy or rocky hills along the way, mostly little used old public roads which have been bypassed with modern sections of road. The event continues throughout the following day and finishes mid afternoon to late evening depending on your start time and any delays. So you get perhaps 18 hrs of competition for an entry fee iro £50, plus petrol for 200 to 300 miles. Compare that with a hill climb where you get maybe four runs up a smooth tarmac hill which may last 50 seconds if you are any good and 90 if you are rubbish. BTW Are't we a tad ![]() This is NOT one of my photographs but illustrates a Marlin at play on the Lands End this year I think. The smoke is from wheelspin. Thanks Steve, I always try to do a sound job, during my apprenticeship as a builder, that was always the emphasis. Those attitudes are transferrable to any enterprise. I don't go much on making cars concours de elegance, they are usually built to stand a hammering. Perhaps my proudest result was coming 43rd on the Tour of Mull Rally in 1980, we were the only Mini to finish that year from 13 entered, which included several 'professional' teams like Mini Sport from Padiham. There were 150 cars entered and about 80 finishers. Sorry I missed a couple of posts above... @ JK, Yes, and no! The car was inspected by DVLA, well more of a glance than an inspection, a two hundred mile round trip and two minutes 'inspection' They have cancelled the registration for TOA 857. They will issue a new, age related registration when I present an MOT, insurance, a letter from the Marlin Owner Club and lot's of money, (about £140 I think). I have a new chassis number for it which DVLA have issued. @ Jeff, Will love to come down and take you for a ride, I am told the Horseshoe Pass is worth a visit? You will need a warm overcoat, there is no heater! @ Ed, Thanks for the links, building cars is a very satisfying thing. You don't appreciate all the thought which goes into creating a car until you actually build one. I thought my days of car building were over with all the regulations we now 'enjoy' here in the UK, but by some trick of good fortune I have stumbled upon a way to do it. I just wish I could do it at a more leisurely pace. I have to complete asap because the local DVLA offices are closing and I have been warned DVLA Swansea will be much more difficult to deal with than the local office.

and lot's of money, .....Yep, DVLA. My favorite people, total vermin. DVLA super-grasses Speed van cops Local councils especially Reading Borough Council. ....all focussed on one (un)ethic: taking money from people and making motorists lives a misery.

Goo luck Robert. Seems like since you have the chassis, engine and gearbox finished there is only a few bits and bobs to do! Seats and storebox!

In my village every year we have the Woodcote steam and veteran transport rally, you don't have to go very far at that event to hear some old fart pulling someone else down, for example two miniature traction engines, both built and finished to exacting standards, but if one has pulled a load of two tons, the other will brag his can pull three because the other guy's cannot be built as well by some perceived divine decree, and so it goes. The better man is the one who doesn't rise to it. In fact, since seeing Robert's work I have more of an interest in Marlins and more of a knowledge of them. Now that is what you call an achievement and something any nit-picker should be envious of.....there's more to it than just the build.

Well if people in UK werent so into pristine tin boxes from Ford, etc... then there would be more fun cars like this. Instead people are obsessive about cleaning and polishing a steel box that if it gets a scratch on it, is like someone has died and of course they have to have a new one every few years as they are so complex that they need a computer to tell the idiot mechanic what is wrong with it. Too much electronics in modern cars!

Too much electronics in modern cars! ....oh yes. As far as the engine is concerned it's the emissions regs forcing it, however the big con trick here is in the secret fact that it's actually the motor manufacturers themselves driving the emissions lobby. BMW are big culprits. Incidentally we have to have CATs because.......Johnson Matthey make catalytic converters, and also happen to have monopoly on the world's platinum. This is one reason why I love my MX5....OBD1 diagnostics (don't need a fancy gizmo), simple fuelling and ignition, and.....guess what it just sailed through an MOT without a catalytic converter, tester said he's never seen a petrol vehicle with such low emission. Despite the fact that I have a few mods and get about 180 BHP. Soon as they went to ODB2 and deliberately flawed cooling systems it all just went crap from there. To my mind, mine and especially Robert's cars are better vehicles in service when it comes down to it than say a beemer, merc, mitsu or Lexus where you can't do nothing without the dealer only software trickery.
