To this on Sunday...

I started the engine on Sunday for the first time since it last ran in December 1988. It was totally seized, we had to use a sledge hammer to free one piston.

I hope to have it on the road before Christmas.

Nice work Robert.

Have you managed to sort out the issues with the DVLA over the lost log book etc.?

Ah well you see, insulting someone's workmanship, not cricket, not done, naughty. But you'll always get characters like that in any sphere. Though easy to see why you would get upset. I'd probably go round the blokes house.

PS is that a ford lump you got in there?

BMC 'A ' Series, 1275 nominally a 1.3 but eventually it, or a cousin will become 1430cc with a little help from my engine man. That's what I used to run in my rally car.

As with everything I have seen or heard from you it is good stuff, a large part of my working life I have been involved with auto parts, retail and wholesale, I have built a couple of cars in the past so I know how much blood, sweat and tears are involved.
right now I am only watching,
I have a friend that is a very good rally driver. check out http://www.subiegal.com and see her photos of rallys here . Another cool sight is http://www.dirtfish.com a driving school, lots of photos and videos    Enjoy!!!!!!!!!

Ah I should have known.

Looks nice!

I became bitten by the sports car bug a year ago, got myself an MX5, ok Japanese BUT...extremely reliable, and, very fast once I'd modified the cooling circuit and got the ECU map spot on with the engine temp. I like the fact that there is absolutely nothing on this car I can't tackle myself, no such thing as special tools. Put an induction kit on it and a hi-flow CAT.

Very thirsty though lol, but such a delight to drive. raises a few grins I can tell you.

As for your A series I note you have an alternator conversion....good idea that!

My late father had many A series engined cars, so did I years ago. Never forget that ridiculous clutch release bearing....cast steel ring with two lugs, containing a plain carbon thrust race. Bloody thing never lasted long and when it went through you had horrible spring-on-steel noises.

Did you know?.....some people fit beemer K1000 heads to A series blocks & convert to fuel injection.

The remarkable thing is that I helped build this car in early 1982 with my friend who then ran it until it failed the MOT at the end of '88 with a log list of expensive faults. While I have been stripping it for rebuild I have seen and recognised many parts and remember fitting them!

It was the 18th Mk2 kit produced which was Morris Marina based, the earlier Mk 1 kits were Triumph Herald based. I have adapted this chassis to a hybrid which uses the Triumph front suspension and the other parts from the Marina, hopefully best of both.

I did the wiring and fitted the engine, painted it red, not such a bright red as this time!

Yes the K BMW conversion is a popular one but would make mine ineligible for class. It would push me into the top class without the significant gains in performance needed to compete at that level.

Most of the trials Marlins are at least 1800cc some even 3500, Rover (Buick) V8. In the interests of economy I have retained the small 'A' Series engine which is considerably lighter than the larger 'B' Series engine and not that far behind in power.

I have been lucky and found an overdrive transmission from a Dolomite 1850, which was a straight bolt in job. I don't know if the o/d works yet...
