Oh.

That's blown that idea then.

It's something I have always wanted to do, maybe middle of February, or wait until November?

What's the "500" bit? I thought the A500 went through Staffordshire...

I am sure there are byways that can be used if it does get busy. Still on my list to do the route...just wait until it's popularity wanes.

I will be up near the Kyle of Lochalsh in May for a week or so with some friends. I want to take a trip around the North coast of Scotland this year, East to West, maybe during the summer.

One or two tips where to visit for relaxed landscape/nature photography would be appreciated. I believe the North West tip is spectacular and perhaps a little less over run with visitors than Skye? Any particular Glens or Lochs?

Well, shamefully, I have to admit my knowledge of Scottish glens and lochs is abysmal. The North 500 would have been a nice drive at one point but As Eric says, it's a victim of its own success. You'd be better waiting for a nice weather window off season to try that one.

I would highly recommend a trip to Orkney. I did that last summer. Is beautiful with loads of interesting stuff to see. You drive up to john o Groats and get the wee ferry over. I did it as an organised bus trip from Inverness which was good but a packed day. Bit more calm to go over for a few days but book well in advance to get accommodation and check the cruise ship timetables as you prob don't want to be there when every site is packed with cruisers.

I've enjoyed a few drives around Loch Ness. Plenty of stuff to stop at on the way round and great views from the highest point. Best person to ask for locations is Jan on this forum (highlander).

ah another returnee welcome back I've only just come back to the fold as well , and funnily enough I'm off to the isle of Anglesea tomorrow to search for reds ..

I discovered there was a RSPB hide abut 20 miles from where I live and there are loads of squirrels around there. I was out in -1 degrees that day, wearing 50 layers of clothes, hugging my flask of tea! And being in the hide didn't Improve the temperature any.

Thanks for that Judith, Loch Ness isn't too far, sounds a good idea, will look into that. I will also look into going over to Orkney.

The train ride to Malaig is wonderful, have done that, highly recommended.

Jan seems to have taken leave of absence recently, perhaps I should give her a nudge, I think I have the url of her blog somewhere, in fact it should be in some of the most recent posts she made. The waterfalls of Glen Etieve and Glen Orchy are well worth visiting, both deserve a full day each.

Nice to see you back.

Check out the thread on upgrading the forum if you have time.
