This is not meant as a tuition, just a heads Up.

I have downloaded a lightmeter app. on a smart- phone...which incorporates an 18 percent Gray card...I place the front lens , ( which is mounted on camera ),practically onto the phones screen , so as to cover the image field, and take a pic.,

....on a D3S / X , set White Balance by selecting ... PRE Preset manual,...press OK , then select the pic., press Set, which then shows the Color checker so as to be able to fine-adjust , ( so-far I have let that stay in the middle ) then press OK...and correct W B is set....for Day-Lite use !!

However,..I do Not understand How,..and yet , even under different Lighting conditions ...Tungsten...Fluerescent..color-rendition is still Good..when extreme precision is required ,the color checker needs only a minor adjustment.

I have been using this system with Different Lenses , ranging from Ancient pre-ai Nikkors to PCE Nikkors..19..24..micro 85...PC 28...PC 35...setting Each lens Individually with the Gray card ( so as to compensate for Lens Color sensitivity/ balance  ) ,  I find that the Color rendition is Very Good ,...works like a charm.
