I have a chance to buy one of these old rectilinear things. It is a non-AI version. Does anyone have experience with this lens and whether it will clear all the internal workings of a modern DSLR? Ken Rockwell's take where it says it won't even mount on a modern camera. I carefully mounted it on a D700 and it clicked into place without any snags. I was afraid to take any photos lest the mirror flip up into a space occupied by lens structure. AI vs non-AI BTW, I already have a 17-35 f2.8 AFS.

Dave, I have seen non-Ai lenses clear the Ai tab on a modern body, but sometimes it will not (it is a matter of fractions). The mirror should be Ok. You may want to search for an Ai ring for this lens. Regards, Gilbert

Hi Dave, has it been converted? It's megga dodgy mounting a non AI lens on a modern camera. They go on easy enough but can sometimes be impossible to get off. If it mounted and removed OK that suggests to me it has been converted. Can you take a pic of the lens mount? The cutout on the mount should relate to the max aperture of the lens. I believe only the 6mm and 8mm fisheye lenses will snag the mirror. Definitive list here. https://nikoneurope-en.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/19026/~/d-slr-camera-and-lens-compatibility The biggest worry is the Ai tab on the body but if you managed to get it on and off the camera then you should be OK. Why not go for the 14mm f2.8 if you want to go wider. I just got a 17-35 f2.8 AFS which completes my Nikon lens collection.

Indeed some versions of 6, 7.5, 8, 21mm lenses need to have mirror up to use. I dont think I will be buying any more lenses for my Nikons as i have my full set of lenses. I might look for a 105 f2.0 but I dont really need one.
