jk wrote:DPReview got a scoop. If true, there is a depressing feeling of d©j vu about this. Nikon were sleepwalking through the D2X era but woken with a jolt with the wholesale drift to Canon. They threw everything they had planned for future drip feeding to the market, in one go....the D3. Phew! I have no doubt that Nikon have some clever developments waiting to be metered out when the time best suits them. That's the problem. Its pointless pulling rabbits out of a hat, when the unsatiated audience is leaving the building. No matter how ground shaking the next 💤 camera will be, some of the audience won't return.

Got to say that I agree. I bought the Z7 and it is a very good camera but.... The buts are very considerable..... ... The EVF is OK but not brilliant. ... The design is flawed as the people who want a vertical (portrait) shutter release cant have one except by upgrading to the Z7ii and getting the battery grip which is unique to that model. ... The S mount is a new lens system so it is a very expensive upgrade for people with F mount lenses ... The FTZ adapter does not work with AFD lenses in AF mode so these lenses are downgraded to manual lenses. It would have been very easy to add a screwdriver motor to the FTZ to provide compatibility with all AF lenses in the F mount range! I know other manufacturers have changed lens throat designs and indeed the move to mirrorless with the shortened flange to sensor distance is such an opportunity but the FTZ adapter is also an opportunity to keep old followers in the camp. I have moved more towards the Fuji mirrorless camp as they have constantly improved the camera. I have been tempted by Canon and Sony moves but I dont like the user interface and menu layouts. They are even more confusing that the Fuji ones which can be equally confusing wrt to some aspects. I guess as I have said before it is about personal preferences and choices. I remain able to use my Nikons and Fujis so moving to Sony which is leading the technology at the moment with superior AF and new features especially with video (that I dont use), isnt going to happen. Will I change to Sony, I cant see it happening but never say never.

I have turned the corner Nikon has missed the boat. I have been looking at the Sony system with 3 respected photographers including a member of my family who changed to Sony nearly 2 years ago and are all very happy. They were very long-term Nikon users like me. I tried the Z for a full week just after it came out and did not like it. I have now had the Sony A7iii for over 2 months and do not regret making the change. I have a history of nearly 60 years of using Nikon cameras. I now have no Nikon equipment and have put down a large deposit on the new Sony A1.

It'll be exciting to see what Nikon comes out with. I think what you've all said is very valid, a lot of people have jumped ship. It's interesting though as of yet I'm not regretting moving to the Z6 II and investing in the Z mount lenses, I've had a bit more time hands-on with the Sony's and I didn't enjoy them as much (looking forward to trying an A1 later this year). Very much looking forward to testing the R5/R6 later this month or beginning of next too, it'll be good to see what that kit can do. I'd personally argue that at this stage, very few of the mirrorless offerings aren't capable of great shots, though Nikon does lag behind on autofocus. That being said I tested the Z7 II earlier this year and very much enjoyed using that, lots of advancements in the area of AF and usability. I have to say I feel quite spoiled with the amount of camera we can get now, feels a LONG way from the D300 and even D600 I bought not that long ago.

I wonder if it is "Lack of leadership " or the lack of backing by means of an Electro Conglomerate who is not involved in the making of camera`s & Lenses but can make all of the electro thingies like sensors and the like, as it is downright "dangerous" to put oneself at the mercy of a competitor...which I view as being the case with Nikon.

Yep, it'll be interesting to see specs and price once it's released. No doubt out of my price range but I look forward to the included tech trickling down to other models.

The common price level I have seen mentioned is £6K which is to me a crazy amount of money. I can get a very fine medium format body (Fuji GFX100S) with all the bells and whistles for that price.

I suppose it's how you view your assets and how you want to spend your income. As you know, I see no value in sitting on equipment that gets little or no use, just because it's resale value is below your expectations. It's yesterday's money. The more choice you have, the greater the obstacle to making that choice. So if the holy grail of photography (the camera for all situations) is about to emerge in Sony, Canon or Nikon livery.....maybe it's worth paying the price, if it's truly the only camera you will ever need? We shall see. What's certain is I had accumulated far too much Nikon equipment (more than I ever needed or used as a professional photographer!) and as I don't pick up a camera often enough or with the enthusiasm I once had to warrant a combination for all eventualities...I am thinning out. One camera and 3 lenses is enough.
