I use to be quite careful, with a couple of drops of fluid. But as time went on I gave it a good wash…on the basis a dry swap would do more damage. The solvent soon evaporates with lens off.
If you can locate the spot leaving the damp swap on the spot for a moment then redoing a clean may work.
You can also get sticky end things to lift visible specks.
My approach was to at first move the mark. If you can do that you have a chance of lifting it off.
If all fails you can take a reference photo against a white wall and use it as a subtraction layer in your editing programme.
