Do not know for sure but on Nikon USA it says Used to correct barrel and pin cushion distortion during shooting and editing.
So that suggests its applied automatically and to a fixed degree for the attached lens...which is ok. But not sure about the editing part...which suggests its a post process step??
Why would you NOT allow auto correction and opt to do it manually afterwards?
I'm a bit puzzled.
