I am inclined to think that the camera was left in a bag or on a shelf with the body cap not fitted correctly. The dust just gathered over the time it was kept as a back-up and got on to the sensor when it was checked occasionally. If you aren't using a camera regularly it is easy to forget to check the sensor cleanliness.
